Hammer Toes

  • characterized by flexion of the proximal toe (PIP) joint and dorsiflexion of the metatarsophalangeal joint

  • one of the commonest foot problems - most common deformity of the lesser toes

  • caused by muscle imbalance and degenerative plantar plate tears

  • associated painful corns, synovitis, arthritis

  • flexible or stiff deformity

  • 2nd toe is usually affected

  • more common in older women

  • dorsal pain upon rubbing with shoes

  • plantar corns/callouses ball of foot

Non-operative treatment

  • Stiff deformity - deep toe box shoes

  • Flexible deformity - strapping of toe into its correct position
